Here are the first tulips of the year to bloom at the Cuparium. These pictures were taken on the 26th of April, before they were ravaged by the recent storm.

First Tulips of the Year
Tuesday, May 10th, 2011The Floodgates Are Open
Friday, April 29th, 2011As of 1:35 p.m. Eastern Time (U.S.), comments in the Cuparium are once again open. I shall be monitoring the amount of spam that ensues and reporting the numbers for seven 14 days (to satisfy my own curiosity mostly). If the amount becomes too enormous, I’ll close the gates again for all but the most recent articles. My handful of loyal readers (well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration)… My couple of loyal readers, you may rejoice now.

Happy Burns Night from the Cuparium
Tuesday, January 25th, 2011Sláinte, Robert Burns and all who revere you!

Happy New Year from the Cuparium
Thursday, December 30th, 2010One of the oldest traditions of the Cuparium is the annual link to the lyrics of Auld Lang Syne composed by the Scottish Bard himself, Robert Burns. Read them, memorize them, and sing them with heart. (Or print them out if you’re not confident about memorizing them.)
Once again, I belatedly pat myself on the back for my accomplishment eight years ago last October of forswearing the smoking of cigarettes. It wasn’t easy, but I haven’t smoked a single cigarette in all that time. As I mentioned last year around this time, I have also coincidentally abstained from smoking pipes and cigars for 26 months now, and that wasn’t even intentional. Bully for me.
I will make no resolutions this year, because I would rather surprise myself with whatever I can accomplish and take satisfaction in that than have a list of things I have failed to accomplish and focus on my defeats. It’s a good idea in theory, at any rate. We shall see.
I wish you peace, health, and prosperity in the New Year and all those to come. Happy New Year!
Halloween 2010
Thursday, November 11th, 2010I accomplished one step in celebrating Halloween this year: I wore a costume for the first time since 1992 (when I was Sherlock Holmes). Next year, I hope to get around to carving pumpkins.
Something of an Update of Sorts
Saturday, October 23rd, 2010When one Web log gets attention, sometimes the other languishes. This month, Cuparia has been the latter as Fudgerylog has been updated almost daily. Here, then, is a brief update of seemingly irrelevant events.
My Blogger site has been renamed in the midst of an internal debate about its rightful purpose. This debate has not reached a conclusion, but its name has been changed from Barrel of Words to Sphere of Annihilation in acknowledgment of the fact that the only reason I started the site was to enable me to comment on other Blogger sites devoted to the “Old School Renaissance” movement in gaming. Whether I will convert mine wholly or partially to OSR topics remains to be seen. At the moment, it remains an update site for Cuparia and Fudgerylog, with certain Fudgerylog articles mirrored there.
Cuparia continues in its state of identity crisis.
My Halloween costumes are nearly complete. Each one lacks only one minor element, one of which I can easily make, the other of which needs to be purchased if it can be found.
Unlike last year, I have done almost no bicycling. When I finally steel my will and get back on the bike, the weather will be less hospitable, but that’s what I deserve. This is probably a consequence of having finally bought a new car, which — unlike my previous mode of motorized transportation — is a pleasure to drive and even has a working driver’s side door handle (a perk not to be underestimated).
I’ll try to post sooner, for reasons I cannot fathom.
Be seeing you…

Japanese Lantern
Thursday, September 9th, 2010A photograph of Physalis alkekengi, also known as Japanese Lantern, Chinese Lantern, Winter Cherry, and Bladder Cherry. According to the Wikipedia entry, “In Japan, its seeds are used as part of the Bon Festival as offerings to guide the souls of the deceased.”

Kwanzo
Friday, August 13th, 2010The kwanzo is a tetraploid daylily. I have limited myself to displaying three images here (photographed on Bastille Day):
