Undecided About Themes

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

I can’t decide whether I prefer this theme (Barthelme) or the old one (Kubrick). What do you think?

[Edit: I just noticed Barthelme wreaks havoc on the tags in the left sidebar. Hm...]

[Edit: Disregard. Cuplog is back to WordPress Default.]

Another Return to Star Trek

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

The first time I watched my Star Trek (the original series) DVDs, I watched the episodes in the order in which they were made. They are arranged on the DVDs in the order in which they were originally aired, but I was interested in how the show developed as it was made, so I had to refer to The Star Trek Encyclopedia for that information. It meant I did a lot of switching back and forth between DVDs, but it was fascinating to watch the show’s evolution. I’ve started watching them again, but this time I’m just watching them in the original broadcast order — it spares me all the hassle, plus it enables me to imagine how viewers experienced the first run of Star Trek.

Here’s a bit of trivia in the form of a question I gleaned from one of tonight’s episodes:

Q: In the episode “Charlie X,” the Antares is referred to as:

  1. a cargo vessel
  2. a transport ship
  3. a survey ship
  4. all of the above
  5. none of the above

Let There Be Heat

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

My furnace became functional again on Monday. How nice it is to sit at my computer without having to wear a heavy coat and hat, rubbing my hands to restore the circulation, and shivering as I type my log entries.

The Fun Continues

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

The snow arrived, and my house is now about 45 degrees Fahrenheit. The furnace won’t be operational until Monday at the earliest — if I’m lucky. ‘Tis cold, but not unbearable.

[Edit: I'm home from work and the house is now 41 degrees.]

Having Fun. You?

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

The winds tonight are 46 to 60 miles per hour and it sounds as if my house is going to blow away. Will I get much sleep tonight? Probably not. As it happens, I am scheduled for a morning shift at work. And we’re expecting snow tonight after a day of occasionally torrential rain. And my wisdom tooth is aching for what will be the third day in a row, along with the accompanying headache. That reminds me…

I need to take some medicine and start sawing logs.

[Edit: Shortly after I wrote the above, I was curious to find out why my furnace wasn't working. It was underwater. Now my house is 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and it will probably get colder. I'm expecting the plumbers first thing in the morning. Incidentally, we didn't get the predicted snow, but I would have preferred it to this.]
