Update Block
Is this not embarrassing? I'm struggling to write a mere update to a Web site, of all things. Struggling! It's ridiculous.
Well, on with the show, as it were. The last film I saw was Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. It's a fun flick packed with references to other works, which you can discover for yourself or read about on IMDb.com. (Just search the database for the title and click on the trivia link.) It is something of a retro-future paradise: robots, rayguns, rockets, dirigibles, flying airfields, submersible fighter planes... The film Metropolis and the Flash Gordon serials spring to mind as obvious influences on the atmosphere and pacing of Sky Captain.
Another film I saw recently was Resident Evil: Apocalypse. I thought it was good for a zombie movie based on a video game and a satisfactory sequel to Resident Evil. And, of course, Milla Javovich starred in it, which is reason enough to find the movie enjoyable.
Speaking of zombie movies, I was looking forward to seeing Shaun of the Dead last Sunday, but it seems I waited too long. It has vanished from most cinemas, and the only showing was for 10:20 p.m., which is a wee bit late for someone who must go to work the next day. I guess I'll just have to wait for the video release.
Two weeks ago Law and Order: Criminal Intent ended a very poorly plotted episode with an invitation to viewers to log on to a Web site and vote on whether Detective Goren's arch-enemy, a cunning and seductive serial killer played by Olivia d'Abo, should live or die. It is distressing that the writers or producers should resort to such a tasteless and amateurish tactic in a series that has otherwise mostly succeeded in maintaining a high standard of writing and acting. It is yet another example (along with script doctors and "reality" programs) of the contempt held by the film and television industry for the writing profession. I could unleash a neverending rant on that subject, and believe me, I would love to, but I lack the time at this time. Later, perhaps.
At least Joan of Arcadia is still good.
Kelly reminds me in the guest book that I have forgotten to include Zingerman's on the links page, and I have now corrected that omission. I linked to them once in a previous update (here), but I had neglected the next step of immortalizing their Web site in the hallowed halls of the Cuparium. Mea culpa. Thanks, Kelly!
There are other new links I've added in the past few months and I hope to make a formal introduction in the near future. Meanwhile, don't forget to vote!
John Kerry for President!
I'll keep posting if you keep reading. Be seeing you... :-?
