NEWLY UPDATED

Please Stand By

If I Were Not in Lexicography There Is Something I Would Be...

A thousand apologies for the Monty Python paraphrase -- it was the first thing that leapt to mind.

I had an interesting dream last night, but I shan't share it lest someone be tempted to interpret it (wrongly, no doubt). All I can say is... no, I can't say it. Forget I mentioned it. Go about your business.

Succinct Notes

Buy the following at the grocery: milk, butter, cheese, grated parmesan, bread.

Site-Seeing

Given the price of the Oxford English Dictionary (q.v.), it has been suggested that I consider a subscription to OED Online. According to the Web site, the price per annum for an individual is US$550. If I were an institution, the price would be US$750. As much as I would appreciate the versatility offered by OED Online, and as much as I would enjoy witnessing the evolution of the upcoming Third Edition (expected in 2010), the price is a bit of an obstacle. If I subscribed for the interim six years (and you can't expect me to be content with just one year of access), it would cost me $3300. Next option...

From the Bookshelf

I have wanted an Oxford English Dictionary for over ten years. The Second Edition is available in three formats: the OED 20 Volume Set, which I could purchase for $895 plus $60 shipping and handling; the Compact OED, which reduces the type to such a degree that all 20 volumes are squeezed into a single volume that cannot be read without a magnifying glass (included) and costs $395 plus $5 shipping and handling; and the OED CD-Rom, which is irrelevant because it's only available for Windows and it still costs almost as much as the Compact OED. I once worked in a bookshop that had the Compact OED in stock, and I could have bought it at a significantly reduced price due to my employee discount, but it's still a painfully expensive book even with the discount. I procrastinated, of course, but it's for the best. I really want the OED 20 Volume Set. I recall seeing in Books in Print a listing for a leatherbound set a few years ago. That would be something. Even if I were to find a way to buy it, though, I am forced to ask myself: Is it wise to pay that much for the 20 volume set when the Third Edition will be published in 2010 and is expected to be twice the size of the Second Edition?

Thank the gods my local public library has it.

At the Cinema

I am eagerly awaiting The Battle of Shaker Heights and Shaolin Soccer.

On the Telly

Losing patience with Coronation Street again. Why do I subject myself to it? I rise at eight o'clock in the morning every Sunday to watch two hours straight when I ought to be taking advantage of the opportunity to sleep as late as I please. If it continues to decline, though, I will be sleeping late on Sunday mornings.

Quotations, Possibly?

"'adsum' [L.] 'I am here,' as an answer in a roll-call, etc."
--Oxford English Dictionary
